Remember the big clear-out of my in-laws house? Well you didn’t think we were finished after getting 6 dumpsters of junk out of that house, now did you?! Or that my shopping sprees where I was thrifting at the in-laws got rid of anything good that was left?

After we got rid of the junk, there still was half a house left of stuff that was to good be thrown out. So these last couple of months we have spent many Saturdays, sorting, purging, cleaning and arranging all that stuff for the ultimate and final Garage-sale.

Next weekend will be the big event and to make sure there will be enough visitors I have made a special flyer. Photographing the various collections in a very dark house, was quite the challenge, but it worked out. So anyone who is in the neighborhood and who can convincingly prove that they are not a creepy stalker or dangerous killer can email me for the exact address and then you can go thrifting at my in-laws too.


Nadat we in het voorjaar druk bezig zijn geweest om de troep uit het huis van mijn schoonouders te halen (herinneren jullie je deze post?) zijn we daarna aan de slag gegaan met alles wat er nog over gebleven was.
Dus hebben we heel wat zaterdagen doorgebracht met sorteren, uitzoeken, schoonmaken en organiseren van eindeloos veel collecties van van alles en nog wat.

En nu is het dan eindelijk tijd voor ons verkoop weekend. Volgende week is het zo ver, dan is er open huis en kan iedereen die interesse heeft (en veel geld meeneemt LOL) het huis komen leeghalen.

Dus dames, als er nog iemand is die zin heeft om naar het zuiden te komen en te komen neuzen tussen onze brocante, jullie zijn van harte welkom. Stuur me een email met wat overtuigend bewijs dat je bent wie je zegt dat je bent en niet een of andere enge stalker, inbreker of moordenaar en ik stuur je het volledige adres.

Pillow Love

I am really loving my blanket. The dark and stormy days of autumn have arrived and I just love to snuggle on the couch with a cup of tea, an interesting read and my new blanket.
Mijn nieuwe zelfgemaakte deken bevalt erg goed. Hij is heerlijk zacht en warm nu het buiten regelmatig zo guur en stormachtig is.


 
I love it so much that I decided to make some matching pillows with the fabric I had left.
Dus heb ik in een paar verloren uurtjes, met wat restjes stof die ik nog over had, twee bijpassende kussens gemaakt.



All these warm colors of autumn are so comforting now. I love the neutrals, the browns and even that touch of orange. It is a reflection of the colors of nature around this time of the year.
Al die warme kleuren vind ik heerlijk in deze tijd van het jaar. Het is een weerspiegeling van de kleuren die de natuur nu ook draagt.




The only downside is that leaving my couch to do ‘something productive’ is getting harder  all the time.
Het enige nadeel is dat ik niets meer gedaan krijg omdat ik mezelf niet los kan weken van mijn lekkere hoekje op de bank.




So I guess I’ll just go back to my tea and my books and snuggle some more.
Ik denk dat ik daar nu ook maar weer  naar terug ga.

Window Mistreatment

Did you ever get yourself in trouble like this? I do it all the time. Take this example. A very dear friend of mine was coming over and would stay the night. So what did I do? Clean the house, change the sheets, go grocery shopping, fluff the house? No none of it, I decided that right then and there I needed to change the curtains in what was now the new guestroom.
Doen jullie jezelf dit ook wel eens aan? Terwijl ik eigenlijk het huis voor een logeetje moest voorbereiden dacht ik nog snel even andere gordijnen op te hangen.

My pink girly curtains were still hanging in the room from when it used to be my craft corner. And those curtains didn’t work anymore because they were too long. So I ‘eyeballed’ the curtains in the attic and thought that a quick exchange would do the trick.

Well you see the evidence of my ability to eyeball it in the first picture. I am a disaster in these matters, can’t deny it any longer, the evidence is here, out into the world.
Op het oog dacht ik dat de gordijnen van de zolder wel zouden passen. Nou NIET dus. Veel te kort. Gelukkig had ik nog een mooie lap stof liggen die ik een tijdje terug bij Ikea gekocht had. Het was een linenachtige vals stof waar ik gelukkig een flink stuk van gekocht had.

So the next step was a quick dash through my fabric stash. Thank god for a recent trip to Ikea where I splurged on fabric. Because I found this beautiful linen looking (but it is flask) material in my closet and more important there was enough of it (curtains take up a lot of fabric, ask me about it).



I really loved the look of these two fabrics together. So ‘au naturel’.

So I measured and then sewed a big panel of the flasky material to the bottom. I was lucky because the ratio happened to turned as 2/3 white to 1/3 flask, wish is a perfect ratio for these kind of things.
Ik had wel ook een beetje geluk want de lengte die ik eraan moest zetten kwam precies neer op een 2/3 – 1/3 verhouding, wat precies goed is voor dit soort akkefietjes. Ik heb nog overwogen om een kantje of randje over de naad te naaien, maar eigenlijk vond ik het wel mooi zo.

I thought about sewing or glueing some ribbon on the borderline, but I actually liked it like this.

 
I think  the Nester would be proud. I am loving the look and my hands are itching to start working on the rest of that tiny space and make the most of it.
Ik denk dat the Nester trots op me zou zijn, Ik ben in ieder geval helemaal blij met mijn nieuwe gordijnen en nu heb ik helemaal zin om ook de rest van dat kamertje aan te pakken (niet dat er veel ruimte is om wat mee te doen, maar toch een beetje decoratie kan ik er nog wel kwijt).

It’s all about me

Have you seen Natasha’s party today? She is hosting an ‘It’s all about me’ party. Everyone participating is doing a project all for themselves, just something that you’d always wanted to do but never took the time to realize. You should go over there and see the painting Natasha made for her mantle, it is gorgeous!
I was gonna play, but I didn’t make it. Life got in the way. Well that is how things go sometimes, I am sure you have all been there. I had thousand ideas for things I was gonna make, but ah well, at least I got my blog design finished, that felt good!
But I really liked the idea of this party, just creating something for the fun of it. So I did do something just for me. I signed up for Artist Class.

  
Mary Green organized it and some great artists will be teaching online classes. I am so excited to have to chance to learn from these talented women. The classes start Sunday. So I’ll have plenty to blog about the next weeks. I am sure you can still sign up too. Maybe you want to take some time doing something in the spirit of ‘It’s all about me’, go on, I know you want to. CU in class!

A Methamorphosis of a different kind

I live in one of the oldest cities in my country (and in Europe for that matter), and for a long time in history it used to be a Roman Catholic centre. My city is loaded with old churches, monasteries, convents and chapels. These old buildings are hard to maintain and it isn’t always easy to find use for them in these modern days.
Many of them have had a metamorphosis into something totally different. I thought I’d share one of my favorite church makeovers here (for more brilliant makeovers visit Susan’s Metamorphosis Monday).
In mijn stad barst het van de oude kerken en kloosters. Veel van die oude gebouwen worden tegenwoordig voor heel andere zaken gebruikt dan waar ze ooit voor gebouwd zijn. Een van de meest geslaagde Makeovers is die van de Dominicanerkerk tot boekenwinkel (voor meer makeovers moet je vooral ook eens bij Susan’s Metamorphosis Monday gaan kijken).




Smack in the middle of our shopping centre you can find a bookstore in an old gothic church. This particular church has had a long and turbulent history and it was on the demolish list before someone decided it would make a good temple of words and wisdom.
The church has been lovingly renovated and you can just  make out some of the leftover paintings on the vaulted ceilings. It really is an excellent makeover, so much so that The Guardian selected this bookstore as the best bookstore in the world in 2008. If you are interested to read more about it you can do that here.
Deze kerk, midden in het centrum hadden ze bijna afgebroken. Gelukkig is hij gered en heeft hij nu een nieuw leven gekregen als tempel voor het geschreven woord. Het ontwerp heeft al een paar prijzen gewonnen en in 2008 heeft the Guardian de boekwinkel tot de mooiste ter wereld uitgeroepen. Als je er meer over wilt lezen kan dat hier.




In the back of the church they have made a small coffee corner where they make the best coffee in town. 
Achterin de kerk zit er hele fijne koffiewinkel waar ze de lekkerste koffie van de stad schenken.
  

As you can see, it is rightfully called coffeelovers.
Het heet niet voor niks Coffeelovers.

New nest

Have you noticed I blog in a new nest? Hard to miss isn’t it. This is what I have been working so hard at these last couple of weeks. And it is the reason I have not been over at your blogs, let alone write posts for my own. It has cost me years of my life to do this, and I need a wig after all that hair pulling, but I did it. HTML does not have any secrets for me (ha! I wish, that stuff could drive a saint crazy).

But what do you think? Was it worth it?

Tada! Mijn huis op het web heeft een makeover ondergaan. Het heeft me bloed, zweet en tranen gekost en ik heb geen haren meer op mijn hoofd, maar het is gelukt. Nou zeg eens, wat vinden jullie ervan?
